Good PPF vs. Bad PPF
Not all Paint Protection Film is equal. The Indian market is flooded with cheap, uncertified film sold under premium-sounding names. Here's what separates a genuine, long-lasting installation from one that will yellow, peel, and void your paint warranty.
A ₹5,000 PPF job is not a bargain.
It's a liability.
India's detailing industry has exploded over the last decade — and so has the volume of counterfeit, grey-market, and substandard PPF being sold to unsuspecting car owners. Walk into any roadside workshop in Mumbai and you'll be quoted a "PPF job" for a fraction of what a certified installer charges. What they won't tell you is what's actually going on the car.
Much of the cheap film circulating in the Indian market is PVC-based — a material that was phased out by serious installers globally years ago. PVC is rigid, prone to cracking in heat, turns yellow within 12–18 months, and uses aggressive adhesives that bond permanently to clear coat. Removing it often takes the paint with it.
Even among TPU films — the correct base material — there is a vast quality spectrum. Legitimate brands like NexFil, XPEL, and SunTek invest heavily in R&D, UV stabilisers, self-healing top coats, and adhesive chemistry. Counterfeit or grey-market "TPU" film often uses recycled or off-spec material with none of these properties — but it looks identical in the roll.
The installer matters just as much as the film. Even genuine premium film, applied by an untrained hand, will bubble, lift at edges, and trap moisture within months. Proper PPF installation requires a climate-controlled bay, computer-cut patterns, and hours of patient wet-application technique — none of which is possible at ₹500 per panel.
The result: thousands of car owners in Mumbai are driving around with film that is actively damaging their paint — and they won't know until it's too late to fix without a full respray.
Film manufactured for one market (often China or Southeast Asia) is relabelled and sold in India without meeting local UV or humidity standards. It may carry a familiar-sounding brand name with no actual connection to the original manufacturer.
Legitimate factories produce rolls that fail quality control — wrong thickness, inconsistent adhesive, or failed UV tests. These are sold cheaply to distributors who pass them on to budget workshops. The film looks fine on the roll; the problems emerge after 6–12 months on a car.
Many workshops source whichever film gives the highest margin, not the best result. A ₹200/metre film sold to a customer as "premium PPF" at ₹800/metre is a 4× markup. There is zero financial incentive to use genuine certified stock when the customer cannot tell the difference at the time of installation.
Unlike automotive glass or tyres, PPF installation in India has no mandatory certification, no consumer protection standard, and no traceability requirement. Any workshop can claim to install "premium PPF" with no accountability — until the film fails and the customer has no recourse.
What good PPF looks like

- Self-healing top coat — Light swirls and minor scratches vanish with heat from the sun or warm water.
- Computer-cut patterns — Edges tuck cleanly behind panels — no exposed sticky edges that collect dirt.
- Hydrophobic surface — Water beads and sheets off, keeping the film and paint clean longer.
- Manufacturer warranty — A legitimate installer provides a written, manufacturer-backed warranty — not just a verbal promise.
- No yellowing over time — Premium TPU film maintains clarity for 7–10 years under normal conditions.
Red flags to watch for
- Yellowing within 1–2 years — Cheap PVC or low-grade TPU film turns amber — especially in Mumbai's heat and UV.
- Visible orange-peel texture — Poor-quality film has a textured surface that distorts reflections and looks worse than bare paint.
- Lifting edges and bubbles — Hand-cut film or poor adhesive leaves edges that peel, trap moisture, and harbour mould.
