The Annual Car Care Calendar for Indian Car Owners
India\'s seasons demand a different approach to car care in each quarter. Here is the complete year-round maintenance calendar, tailored for Mumbai and Indian conditions.
The Annual Car Care Calendar for Indian Car Owners
India's climate is not uniform, and neither should be your approach to car care. The conditions your vehicle faces in Mumbai's monsoon are fundamentally different from those it faces in the dry summer months. A car care routine that ignores these seasonal variations is leaving your vehicle's paint, glass, and underbody unnecessarily exposed.
This calendar provides a month-by-month guide to car care for Mumbai and the broader Indian context, with specific recommendations for each season.
January–February: Winter Maintenance
Mumbai's "winter" is mild by global standards — temperatures of 15°C–25°C, low humidity, and minimal rainfall. This is the best time of year for certain car care procedures.
January
Annual professional detail: The beginning of the year is an excellent time for a comprehensive professional detail — decontamination, paint inspection, and any correction work required. The mild conditions make this the optimal time for ceramic coating application.
Underbody inspection: Have the underbody inspected for any corrosion that developed during the monsoon. Early-stage rust is easily treated; advanced corrosion is significantly more expensive.
Leather conditioning: The dry winter air can cause leather seats to dry out. Apply a quality leather conditioner to keep the leather supple.
Tyre inspection: Check tyre pressure (cold inflation), tread depth, and condition. Winter is a good time to address any tyre issues before the demands of the monsoon season.
February
Ceramic coating application: If you are planning to have a ceramic coating applied, February is an ideal month — low humidity, moderate temperatures, and minimal dust create optimal application conditions.
Paint protection film: Similarly, February is an excellent time for PPF installation. The mild conditions allow the adhesive to cure properly without the complications of high humidity or extreme heat.
Interior deep clean: A thorough interior detail — vacuuming, leather cleaning and conditioning, carpet shampooing — sets the car up well for the year ahead.
March–May: Pre-Summer and Summer Preparation
Mumbai's summer brings intense heat and UV exposure. Temperatures can reach 35°C–40°C, and UV intensity is at its annual peak.
March
UV protection check: Inspect your ceramic coating's condition. If the coating is more than 2 years old, consider a professional inspection and booster application before the intense UV exposure of summer.
Tyre pressure adjustment: Tyre pressure increases with temperature. Check and adjust tyre pressure as temperatures rise.
Coolant system check: While not strictly a detailing concern, the cooling system is under maximum stress in summer. Ensure coolant levels and condition are correct.
April
Pre-monsoon preparation begins: April is the time to start preparing for the monsoon. Book a pre-monsoon detail appointment for May.
Wiper blade inspection: Check wiper blades for streaking, skipping, or uncleared areas. Replace if more than 12 months old — they need to be in perfect condition for the monsoon.
Rubber seal conditioning: Apply rubber conditioner to all door seals, window seals, and the sunroof seal. This keeps them supple and maintains their water-sealing capability.
May
Pre-monsoon detail: The most important car care appointment of the year. This should include:
- ▸Full decontamination (iron fallout, tar, clay bar)
- ▸Paint inspection and any necessary correction
- ▸Ceramic coating booster application (or full recoat if required)
- ▸Glass coating application or refresh
- ▸Underbody inspection and protection refresh
Drainage channel clearing: Clear all drainage channels — particularly sunroof drainage channels and the channels around the windscreen — of any debris that could cause water to back up during the monsoon.
Air conditioning service: The monsoon brings high humidity that places heavy demands on the air conditioning system. Service the AC before the monsoon begins.
June–September: Monsoon Season
Mumbai's monsoon is the most demanding period for car care. Rainfall can exceed 100mm per day during peak events, and the combination of rain, road contamination, and humidity creates aggressive conditions for automotive surfaces.
June
Monsoon begins: Increase washing frequency to every 5–7 days. The contamination that accumulates during monsoon driving is more aggressive than at other times of year.
Post-rain drying: Dry the car as soon as possible after rain, particularly after light rain (which concentrates dissolved pollutants more than heavy rain).
Wheel arch attention: Clean wheel arches thoroughly during each wash. Road contamination accumulates rapidly in the arches during the monsoon.
July
Mid-monsoon check: Inspect the paint for any water spot etching or contamination staining that has developed. Address early-stage issues before they become more serious.
Interior moisture management: Check for any water ingress into the cabin. Use silica gel dehumidifier bags to manage interior humidity.
Underbody rinse: After driving through flooded roads, rinse the underbody with low-pressure water to remove aggressive contamination.
August
Continued monsoon maintenance: Maintain the washing frequency established in June. The monsoon typically peaks in July–August in Mumbai.
Wiper blade check: Wiper blades work harder during the monsoon than at any other time. If they are streaking or skipping, replace them immediately.
September
Monsoon winds down: Rainfall decreases through September. Begin planning the post-monsoon recovery detail.
Contamination assessment: Assess the paint for contamination staining and water spot etching that has accumulated during the monsoon. This will inform the scope of the post-monsoon detail.
October–December: Post-Monsoon Recovery and Preparation
The post-monsoon period is a time for recovery — addressing the damage accumulated during the monsoon — and preparation for the mild winter months ahead.
October
Post-monsoon detail: Book a comprehensive post-monsoon detail that includes:
- ▸Full decontamination to remove four months of monsoon contamination
- ▸Paint inspection and correction for any water spot etching or contamination staining
- ▸Ceramic coating inspection and booster application
- ▸Underbody inspection for corrosion
Rubber seal inspection: Inspect all seals for damage caused by the monsoon. Replace any seals that are cracked or no longer sealing effectively.
November
Preparation for the show season: November–February is the season for car shows and enthusiast events in Mumbai. If you plan to attend, November is the time to prepare your vehicle.
Leather conditioning: After the monsoon's humidity, leather may need conditioning to restore suppleness.
Alloy wheel refurbishment: If your alloy wheels have accumulated brake dust staining or kerb damage during the year, November is a good time to address this before the show season.
December
Year-end review: Assess your car's overall condition at year-end. What protection is in place? When was it last professionally inspected? What work is planned for the new year?
Booking ahead: Book your January professional detail appointment before the year-end holiday period — good detailing studios book up quickly.
The Maintenance Washing Routine: Year-Round
Regardless of season, a consistent washing routine is the foundation of good car care.
Frequency: Every 1–2 weeks in the dry season; every 5–7 days during the monsoon.
Method: Two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre wash mitt. Never use automatic car washes.
Drying: Clean microfibre drying towel or forced-air dryer.
Ceramic booster: Apply every 3–6 months to maintain the coating's hydrophobic performance.
Professional Care: The Annual Schedule
A well-maintained vehicle should receive professional care at least twice per year:
Pre-monsoon (May): Decontamination, correction if required, protection refresh, glass coating refresh.
Post-monsoon (October): Decontamination, correction for monsoon damage, protection inspection and booster.
For high-value vehicles, quarterly professional inspections are recommended.
