India's electric vehicle market is growing faster than almost any analyst predicted. The Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3, and increasingly the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are becoming familiar sights on Mumbai's roads. With them comes a new set of questions for car care professionals and owners alike.

Electric vehicles are not simply conventional cars with a different powertrain. They have unique surfaces, sensors, structural considerations, and paint characteristics that require a thoughtful approach to detailing. Getting it wrong is not merely a cosmetic problem — it can affect the vehicle's safety systems.

The ADAS Sensor Challenge

Modern EVs are equipped with an array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — cameras, radar units, ultrasonic sensors, and in some cases LiDAR arrays — that are integrated into the vehicle's exterior surfaces. These sensors are not merely accessories; they are safety-critical components.

Cameras are typically mounted in the front grille, rear bumper, door mirrors, and in some vehicles (Tesla, for example) in the B-pillar. They must be kept clean and optically clear. Contamination — water spots, polish residue, wax buildup — can degrade their performance.

Radar units are usually located behind the front badge or grille. They are sensitive to metallic contamination and should not be exposed to iron decontamination products (ferrous fallout removers) without careful masking.

Ultrasonic sensors are embedded in bumpers and are generally robust, but their housings should not be subjected to high-pressure water jets at close range.

Paint Characteristics: What Makes EV Paint Different

Several of the most popular EVs in India — particularly Tesla vehicles — use paint systems that differ from conventional automotive paint in ways that matter for detailing.

Tesla's paint is widely documented in the professional detailing community as being softer than average — more susceptible to swirl marks and light scratching. This is partly a function of Tesla's paint application process (which uses a thinner clear coat than many European manufacturers) and partly a function of the paint chemistry itself.

The practical implication: Tesla vehicles require more careful washing technique, gentler polishing compounds, and benefit significantly from paint protection film on high-contact areas. A Tesla that has been washed at an automatic car wash for a year will typically show significantly more paint defects than a comparable BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

BYD's paint on the Atto 3 and Seal has been noted by detailers as having good hardness but variable thickness across panels — a characteristic of the company's manufacturing process that requires careful paint depth gauge measurement before any correction work.

Tata's paint on the Nexon EV is broadly similar to the conventional Nexon — adequate but not exceptional, and benefiting from protection.

The Undercarriage: A New Consideration

Conventional petrol and diesel vehicles have complex undercarriages — exhaust systems, fuel lines, transmission components — that require careful navigation during underbody cleaning. EVs simplify this significantly, but introduce a new consideration: the battery pack.

EV battery packs are typically mounted as a flat slab beneath the vehicle floor, protected by a structural enclosure. This enclosure is designed to be robust, but it is not designed to be subjected to high-pressure water jets at close range, particularly at the seams and drainage points.

Professional EV detailing uses controlled pressure and appropriate standoff distances for underbody work. The goal is to remove road contamination — salt, grime, brake dust — without forcing water into areas where it should not go.

Charging Port and High-Voltage Components

The charging port is an obvious area requiring care. Water ingress into the charging port is generally prevented by the port's design, but detailing products — particularly spray sealants and dressings — should not be applied in or around the port opening.

High-voltage orange cables and components visible in the engine bay (which in an EV is typically a frunk or a motor bay) should not be dressed with silicone-based products. These components are designed to be identifiable by their orange colour; coating them with a dressing that changes their appearance is both unnecessary and potentially confusing for service technicians.

Paint Protection: Why EVs Need It More

The combination of softer paint (in the case of Tesla), higher vehicle values, and the long ownership cycles typical of EV buyers makes paint protection a particularly strong investment for electric vehicle owners.

Our recommendation for most EVs:

Full-front PPF (bonnet, front bumper, wings, door edges, mirror caps) using NexFil Supreme or Ultra series film. The self-healing top coat addresses the swirl marks that EVs are particularly prone to accumulating.

Ceramic coating over the PPF and on all remaining painted surfaces. This adds hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, and makes the vehicle significantly easier to maintain between professional details.

Glass coating on all windows and the windscreen. This dramatically improves wet-weather visibility — a safety benefit that is particularly relevant given the ADAS cameras mounted in the windscreen area of many EVs.

Maintenance Between Professional Details

EV owners should follow a maintenance washing protocol that minimises the risk of paint marring:

  • ·Pre-rinse with low-pressure water to remove loose contamination before any contact washing
  • ·Two-bucket or rinseless wash using a high-lubricity shampoo or rinseless product
  • ·Microfibre drying with a clean, high-pile drying towel — never a chamois or squeegee
  • ·Periodic ceramic booster application to maintain the coating's hydrophobic performance

Avoid automatic car washes entirely. The brushes and rollers in tunnel washes are the primary cause of the swirl marks that make Tesla paint look tired after a year of ownership.

The Growing EV Detailing Market in Mumbai

Mumbai's EV adoption is accelerating. The combination of FAME II subsidies, improving charging infrastructure, and the genuine running cost advantages of EVs in a city with Mumbai's traffic patterns is driving rapid growth in the EV fleet.
