The car you drive today is almost certainly equipped with safety systems that did not exist a decade ago. Lane departure warning. Automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control. Blind spot monitoring. These systems — collectively known as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS — rely on sensors embedded in your vehicle's exterior surfaces to function.

What many car owners do not realise is that these sensors can be affected by how the car is cleaned and detailed. Contamination, product residue, and even the type of protection applied to the vehicle's surfaces can degrade sensor performance in ways that are not immediately obvious but that have real safety implications.

Understanding What Is on Your Car

Modern vehicles can carry anywhere from 6 to 30+ sensors depending on the level of ADAS equipment fitted. The main types relevant to detailing are:

Forward-facing cameras are typically mounted behind the windscreen, near the rear-view mirror. They monitor the road ahead for lane markings, vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic signs. Contamination on the windscreen directly in the camera's field of view can cause false readings or system deactivation.

Rear cameras are mounted in the tailgate, boot lid, or rear bumper. They are exposed to road spray, mud, and contamination from the rear of the vehicle.

Surround-view cameras (360° systems) are mounted in the front grille, door mirrors, and rear. Each camera has a small lens that must remain clean and optically clear.

Radar units are typically mounted behind the front badge or grille, and sometimes in the rear bumper. They emit and receive microwave signals to detect objects at range. Metallic contamination — iron fallout, for example — can interfere with radar performance.

Ultrasonic sensors are the small circular sensors visible in front and rear bumpers. They use sound waves to detect nearby objects during parking manoeuvres.

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is currently found primarily on higher-end vehicles and autonomous driving development platforms. It uses laser pulses to create a 3D map of the vehicle's surroundings. LiDAR units are typically mounted on the roof or in the front grille area.

How Detailing Can Affect Sensor Performance

Camera Lens Contamination

The most common detailing-related sensor issue is product residue on camera lenses. Spray waxes, quick detailers, ceramic spray coatings, and glass treatments can all leave a film on camera lenses if applied carelessly.

This film may not be visible to the naked eye, but it can scatter light in ways that degrade the camera's image quality. In some cases, it can cause the ADAS system to display a "camera blocked" warning or deactivate the relevant safety function.

Prevention: Mask camera lenses before applying any spray product. Use a dedicated lens cleaning cloth to clean camera lenses after any detailing work in their vicinity.

Radar Interference

Radar units are generally robust, but they can be affected by metallic contamination. Iron decontamination products — spray-on fallout removers that dissolve iron particles embedded in paint — should not be applied directly to radar unit housings or the areas immediately surrounding them.

More significantly, metallic paint protection films or coatings applied over radar unit locations can attenuate the radar signal. This is why professional PPF installers cut around radar unit locations rather than covering them.

Prevention: Identify radar unit locations before any decontamination or protection work. Mask appropriately. Never apply metallic-effect coatings or films over radar locations.

Ultrasonic Sensor Damage

Ultrasonic sensors are generally durable, but their housings can be damaged by high-pressure water jets applied at close range. The sensor housing is designed to be watertight under normal conditions, but sustained high-pressure water at close range can force water past the seals.

Prevention: Maintain appropriate standoff distance (minimum 30cm) when using pressure washers near ultrasonic sensor locations. Use a wide-angle nozzle rather than a narrow jet.

Windscreen Treatment and Forward Camera Performance

This is perhaps the most nuanced issue. Forward-facing cameras mounted behind the windscreen view the road through the glass. Any treatment applied to the windscreen — including glass coatings, rain repellents, and anti-glare treatments — changes the optical properties of the glass in the camera's field of view.

Most modern glass coatings are optically neutral and do not affect camera performance. However, some older or lower-quality glass treatments can introduce optical distortion or change the glass's refractive index in ways that affect camera calibration.

Prevention: Use only optically neutral glass coatings from reputable manufacturers. Inform your detailer that your vehicle has a forward-facing camera behind the windscreen.

ADAS Calibration After Detailing

Some detailing procedures — particularly those involving the windscreen — can require ADAS recalibration. Windscreen replacement always requires recalibration of any cameras mounted behind it. Windscreen polishing (to remove wiper scratches or water spots) can also affect camera calibration if the polishing changes the optical properties of the glass in the camera's field of view.

ADAS calibration is a specialist procedure that requires dedicated equipment and, in most cases, a visit to the vehicle manufacturer's authorised service centre or a specialist ADAS calibration facility.

Our approach to detailing vehicles with ADAS equipment follows a documented protocol:

  • ·Masking: Apply appropriate masking to camera lenses, radar unit housings, and LiDAR units before any spray product application.
  • ·Pressure management: Use controlled pressure and appropriate standoff distances near sensor locations during washing.
  • ·Product selection: Use optically neutral glass treatments and avoid metallic-effect coatings near radar locations.
  • ·Post-work verification: Check all sensor locations for product residue and clean as necessary before returning the vehicle.

This protocol adds time to the detailing process. It is time well spent.

A Note on PPF Around Sensors

Paint protection film installation around ADAS sensors requires particular care. The film must be cut precisely to avoid covering sensor locations, and the edges must be sealed to prevent lifting that could obstruct sensor fields of view.
